Using Respondus Monitor in Canvas with a Hawkes WebTest

The option to require Respondus Monitor is currently available by request. Please email training@hawkeslearning.com if you would like to have this feature enabled.

Checklist Before Starting

Add a Link to a Hawkes WebTest to a Canvas Quiz

1. Create and name a quiz in Canvas.

2. In the quiz Instructions, mention that this quiz must be taken using Respondus Lockdown Browser and include any other important instructions for students.

3. Select the Questions tab at the top.

4. Select +New Question.

a. Change the question type from "Multiple Choice" to "Text (no question)".

b. In the Message Text area, include:

    • Any relevant directions for taking the WebTest, such as:

1. Launch the WebTest in Hawkes using the following link: [Insert Hawkes WebTest name here]
2. Complete and submit your Hawkes WebTest
3. Close the Hawkes tab to return to the Canvas tab
4. Answer this question, and submit the Canvas quiz to finish

    • The direct link to the Hawkes WebTest

c. To add the direct link, highlight the Hawkes WebTest name in Step 1, select the Links drop-down, select Course Links, expand Assignments, and select the Hawkes WebTest you want to link.


d. Select the HTML Editor for the Message Text box.


i. While in the HTML editor, find the text for the direct link you added.

ii. The exam name will be listed twice. Find the '>' that precedes the second instance of the exam name and past target="_blank" in front of it. For example:


iii. Press Update Question.

5. Go back to the Details tab and adjust the settings.

Recommended settings:

a. Set a time limit on the Canvas quiz that is a minimum of five minutes more than the time limit for the Hawkes WebTest.

b. Add Available From and Until dates under the Assign box that correspond to the start and end dates you entered for the Hawkes WebTest.

6. Press Save & Publish.

Enable Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor Within Canvas

1. Within Canvas, select the LockDown Browser option from the navigation menu on the left.

2. Select the down arrow next to the Canvas quiz you created, and select Settings.


3. Select "Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam".


4. Expand the Advanced Settings by selecting the "+" plus sign.

5. Check the box for "Allow access to specific external web domains".


6. Copy and paste the following web domains into the box:

  • hawkeslearning.com
  • learn.hawkeslearning.com
  • lmssynctool.hawkeslearning.com
  • http://support.hawkeslearning.com
  • [Your specific LMS domain]
    • [Your specific LMS domain] is the domain displayed when you are logged into your Canvas account. It is everything after https:// and ends with .edu or .com. For example, in the screenshot below, the domain needed would be the highlighted portion of the URL.

7. Select "Require Respondus Monitor (automated proctoring) for this exam". Adjust the startup sequence to your preference.


8. Select Save + Close. This may take a moment to process.

9. Scroll up to confirm that LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor are required for the Canvas quiz.
