If using a screen reader, we recommend reviewing and utilizing all of the following best practices:

Screen Reader Compatibility Mode

We recommend that students enable "Screen Reader Compatibility" mode in the software to improve navigation.

  1. Log into your student account.
  2. Click your name in the top right corner, then Settings.
  3. On the General tab, click Edit next to Accessibility.
  4. Select Yes from the dropdown menu and Save Changes.

Although the content is still accessible without this compatibility mode turned on, turning the mode on will make for a more efficient and ideal experience for a student using a screen reader.

Recommended Screen Reader and Web Browser Combinations

Hawkes Learning recommends the following screen reader and web browser combinations when using the Hawkes Learning student software.

Below combinations are listed in our recommended order with NVDA and Firefox being the best user experience.

  • NVDA and Firefox or Chrome web browsers
  • NVDA with MathPlayer4 installed and Firefox or Chrome web browsers
  • JAWS and Firefox or Chrome web browsers
    • If using a Hawkes Learning math title, enable the built-in Math Viewer in JAWS for a more user-friendly experience with complex math equations. Do this by clicking Enter when an equation is being read, then navigate using your arrow keys.
    • For more information on how to use the built-in Math Viewer in JAWS, visit the following website: https://www.freedomscientific.com/SurfsUp/MathML.htm

Learn Mode

For a screen reader compatible version of our eBooks we recommend students utilize the Learn mode within the software.

Learn mode contains all of the exact same instructional content as the textbook and eBook, but is accessible to screen readers for an optimal student experience.
