What is the Message Assistant

The Message Assistant is a personalized communication tool that enables instructors to generate personalized, data-informed student messages directly from the Detailed Student Grades Reports, saving instructors time and strengthening their impact.

How to Use Message Assistant

1. In your Hawkes course, go to Reports > Detailed Student Grades.

2. Choose the student to view their individual report.

3. Click Send Email in the top menu bar.


4. Select the Message Assistant dropdown.


5. You will be presented with a menu of messaging choices, including the choice of "Tone" and "Intent". Please review the section below for more details about these options.

6. After your message is generated, you may choose to revise the draft by clicking Regenerate Draft. When you're satisfied with the content, click Add to Mail.


7. In your final version, you can edit or format your draft using the built-in formatting toolbar. When you're ready to send the message, click Send.

Tone Options

Supportive: Warm and actionable. Acknowledges effort. Human, specific, helpful.

Direct: Clear and concise. Sets expectations without sounding harsh. Courteous.

Informative: Minimal emotion, maximum clarity. Factual, organized.

Professional: Polished and courteous for formal notes. Precise, tidy.

Motivational: Confident-building language. Purpose-oriented.

Intent Options

Missing Work

  • Tooltip: Remind about work not submitted and how to complete it.
  • Focus: Prompt a student to complete overdue work by naming the assignment, due date, and next step(s).

Low Performance

  • Tooltip: Address a low score and guide the student to improve.
  • Focus: Acknowledge the low score, give one improvement action, and point to resources or support.

Progress Update

  • Tooltip: Summarize overall grades with one focused next step.
  • Focus: Provide a snapshot of current grade or trend and identify the single most important next action.

Positive Reinforcement

  • Tooltip: Recognize a success and channel it into continued progress.
  • Focus: Highlight a specific achievement, acknowledge effort, and connect it to the next milestone.

Check-In / Support Offer

  • Tooltip: Reach out to offer support, resources, or open the for conversation.
  • Focus: Build relationship and empath; show availability. Invite dialogue about challenges.
