How to Set up the Hawkes Synchronization Tool and Single Sign On Link in Canvas

The Hawkes Synchronization Tool allows instructors to synchronize their students??? Hawkes grades with Canvas.

The Hawkes Single Sign On link allows students to access the Hawkes web platform directly from Canvas without having to enter login credentials.

Requirements

  • Key and Shared Secret from Hawkes Learning
  • User with a Canvas account
  • Permission to add external applications to a course

Setup Steps

Note: We recommend adding the Hawkes applications at the account level so that all instructors have access to them. (If sub-accounts are used, the applications could be added at the sub-account level instead.) For security purposes, Hawkes Learning does not provide the key and secret to individual instructors.

  1. Turn on developer key
  2.     a. Log into Canvas as an administrator
        b. Go to Accounts > Developer Keys > Inherited
        c. Select the Show All button at the bottom of the table of inherited developer keys
        d. Search for 170000000000132
        e. Set the state to ON
  3. Add the Hawkes Synchronization Tool as an external application
    a. Select Settings
    b. Select Apps > View App Configurations

    c. Select the +App button
    d. Fill in the following information:
    • Name: Hawkes Sync Tool
    • Consumer Key: Provided by Hawkes Learning
    • Shared Secret: Provided by Hawkes Learning
    • Configuration Type: Manual Entry
    • URL: https://lmssynctool.hawkeslearning.com/LTILaunch
    • Domain: Leave blank
    • Privacy: Public
    • Custom Fields: Leave blank
    • Description: "Tool to sync a Canvas course with a Hawkes Learning course"
    e. Press Submit
  4. Add the Hawkes Single Sign On link as an external application
    a. Select Settings
    b. Select Apps > View App Configurations

    c. Select the +App button
    d. Fill in the following information:
    • Name: Hawkes Single Sign On
    • Consumer Key: Provided by Hawkes Learning
    • Shared Secret: Provided by Hawkes Learning
    • Configuration Type: Manual Entry
    • URL: https://lmssynctool.hawkeslearning.com/LTISSOLaunch
    • Domain: Leave blank
    • Privacy: Public
    • Custom Fields: Leave blank
    • Description: "Link to access the Hawkes web platform directly" (Single Sign On)
    e. Press Submit
  5. Add tools to a course
    a. Select the Course
    b. Select Modules from the navigation bar
    c. Select +Module to add a new module named "Hawkes Learning" (or add to an existing module)
    d. Press the + button to the right of the module name to add content
    e. From the drop-down menu labeled "Add...", select External Tool

    f. Select either the Hawkes Sync Tool or Hawkes Single Sign On external application that you just added
    g. Check the box next to "Load in a new tab"
    h. Press Add Item.
    i. Repeat steps a-h for the second tool
    j. (Single Sign On link only) Publish the link

Notes

  • The module that the Single Sign On link was added to needs to be published
  • The Hawkes Sync Tool link should not be published
  • Selecting the Single Sign On link before the course has been linked to a Hawkes section will result in a message indicating that the course has not been set up yet. This is expected.
  • When testing the Single Sign On link as an instructor or LMS administrator, do not impersonate a student. This will result in an error.
